When We Meet and What's Happening

North Shore & Waitakere Hospitals have introduced a new parking system as of the 1st July.  All parking will have to be paid for - a minimum of $3.  There will be no manned gates anymore and you will be required to pay for your parking before leaving the building. The ticket will then be put through a machine to allow the arm to rise and let you out of the hospital grounds.  Please make sure that you have money to pay for the parking.  It is not up to our volunteer drivers to pay.

The Hospitals have been ringing members and giving them appointments for the next day.  We would ask that prior to accepting these appointments you check with us first if you require a ride with our Welfare Vehicle.  It would be helpful if we can be given at least one week’s notice prior to your appointment as the schedules need to be worked out, and in some cases our wonderful volunteer drivers need to be notified that we require their help.

NZDF MEDAL 7th February 2011

Latest information on the NZDSM medal project.

Applications for the NZ Defence Service Medal (NZDSM) are expected to open in early April 2011 for the oldest ex Service persons.  Applications can only open after Her Majesty the Queen has approved the Royal Warrant and the Governor-General has signed the regulations. The proposed design of the medal has been finalised by the Herald of Arms Extraordinary and will be sent to the Queen shortly forapproval.  Manufacturing will occur once the design has been approved by the Queen.

Around 160,000 personnel qualify for the NZDSM and the Defence Force Medals Office expect to issue around 116,000 medals over the next three years.  With such high numbers a priority programme is necessary and the Minister of Defence has directed that the priority will be:

Those living ex-Service personnel over the age of 70

Those living ex-Service personnel over the age of 60

            Then other living ex-Service personnel

Terminally ill ex-Service personnel will be given priority over all other applicants but will still need to apply in the usual manner.

Families of deceased ex-service personnel will be invited to apply for their late relation’s (husband/father/mother etc.) medal entitlements after the processing of the initial applications from older living ex-Service personnel is well underway, possibly in late 2011.  An initial NZDSM Presentation will be made to a selected group of ex-Service personnel at a ceremony in Parliament in the first half of 2011.  For logistical reasons it is anticipated that the majority of these personnel will be drawn from the Wellington area.

Regional medal presentations will be arranged by local RSA branches from late May 2011.

If you have a computer please visit http://medals.nzdf.mil.nz/nzdsm/faqs.html for any further information.

For those of you who don’t have computers we will post any updates on our notice board.

Veterans and Next of Kin can apply for a Supplementary War Service Gratuity.  The Veteran has to have served in either WWII or Korea and be in receipt of a War Disablement Pension.  Please phone Janet our Welfare Officer for the   Application Forms

Many organisations these days ask people if they would bequeath a small amount in their will.  We would ask that members give this matter their consideration and may be bequeath an amount to our Welfare fund knowing that the money will be well spent on those we know are in need.

Hospital Appointments

Please remember to book in with us as soon as you get your appointment. A day's notice does not give us enough time to co-ordinate all the appointments and to arrange our drivers.

We would also like to remind members that we do not take appointments that require our drivers to be on the road before 8am in the morning

Names of Members in Hospital or in Rest Home Care

If you know of anyone who is ill, in Hospital or Rest Home care please let us know so we can visit.  Often we find out when they have been discharged.

Volunteer Drivers Needed

We are always looking for volunteer drivers to help out on our busy days. If you would like to help please phone the office between 9 am to 5 pm and leave your contact details.

Funerals

Did you know Members can have their Funeral Service at the Silverdale RSA. If you would like more details regarding this please contact the Welfare Officer.

Local RSAs provide welfare services designed to assist ex-servicemen and women in need, whether or not they are members of a Returned Services’ Association.

Each RSA appoints a Welfare Officer to co-ordinate these services and to give advice on the various community services available to ex-service personnel and their families.

How We help

RSA assistance ranges from monetary grants for those in financial difficulty, to help with practical tasks, visiting the sick, meals-on-wheels, and offering friendship and support in times of need.

Who We help

Help is available to all ex-servicemen and women, their spouses/partner, widows/widowers and dependants, whether or not they are members of an RSA.

Overseas Veterans

Help and contact details for overseas veterans now resident in New Zealand.

Pensions Advice and Welfare Services

RSA offers assistance to the ex-service community in a number of ways, most importantly by making pensions advice and welfare services easily accessible and widely available to all ex-servicemen and women. Membership of the RSA is not necessary.

War Pensions and Allowances

War veterans and ex-servicemen and women may be entitled to a war pension and a range of appropriate allowances from the New Zealand Government. RSA offers assistance at every stage of the application process to ensure that all ex-service people receive the pensions and other benefits to which they, or their dependents, are entitled.

RSA Welfare Services

RSA Welfare Services aim to ensure that no ex-serviceman or woman suffers undue hardship. Each RSA has a Welfare Officer to assist and advise on the many community services available to all ex-service personnel and their families, and when appropriate on sources of financial assistance from RNZRSA, RSA and other welfare funds.

Welfare
Many organisations these days ask people if they would bequeath a small amount in their will. We would ask that members give this matter their consideration and maybe bequeath an amount to our Welfare fund knowing that the money will be well spent on those we know are in need.
